Gladys Porter Zoo Implements New Pricing Model to Maintain a World-Class Zoo
GladysPorterZoo2023-03-10T20:58:56+00:00Beginning March 10th, the Gladys Porter Zoo will be implementing a new dynamic pricing model. Zoo admission prices will now vary through July, depending upon the day of the week. This dynamic model is currently used nationwide at various attractions and is intended to encourage visitorship from Monday through Thursday when the attraction is generally less crowded. At the same time, the slightly higher cost to attend the Zoo provides an inflation-based increase in income at the front gate. Since 90 percent of the Zoo’s operating income is derived from admission sales, this adjustment is needed to maintain a world-class [...]

The Zoo last had capybaras in the early 1970s, however, they never reproduced. “It has been many years since we have had capybaras in our collection,” said Walter DuPree, the Zoo’s Curator of Mammals. “Then, in 2017, we placed an elderly pair of capybaras on exhibit. These two brothers, Leonardo and Rollo, arrived from the Indianapolis Zoo and have earned the title of Gladys Porter Zoo’s very first warthogs. They may not be the most attractive looking mammals, but they are incredibly intelligent and can quickly adapt to their environment. Native to Sub-Saharan Africa, warthogs will typically eat vegetation, such as roots and grasses but will occasionally eat meat when the opportunity arises. When startled, warthogs can run up to [...]
